The Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) at Mission Children's Hospital provides continuous care to critically ill or injured babies, children and adolescents. Combining electronic monitoring and life-support systems, with personal attention from a compassionate team of specially trained nurses, qualified therapists and Board Certified Pediatric Intensivists, we deliver advanced care that supports your child's optimal recovery. Our dedication to inclusive team-work means that we value family-centered care, consult with subspecialists as necessary and keep referring physicians well informed. Mission Children's PICU serves residents and visitors of Western North Carolina through Neonatal Intensive Care, a Neonatal Developmental Follow-up Program, Pediatric Critical Care and Transport Services.
Pediatric Intensive Care Services are available only by referral through a primary care physician or the Emergency Department. Please discuss any concerns about your child's health with your primary care provider.
Intensive Care Services
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Offering the state's highest level of designated care, Mission Children's NICU treats about 600 ill or premature newborns every year. Our expert team ensures advanced neonatal support and works together with parents to teach newborn care.
Neonatal Developmental Follow-up Program. Since illness, trauma or premature birth may impact normal development, Mission Children's PICU offers a proactive Neonatal Developmental Follow-up Program to track and screen children for potential developmental delays.
Pediatric Critical Care. Children demand highly specialized care from physicians and professionals trained to understand the impact of illnesses and injuries on their developing bodies. Mission Children's Pediatric Critical Care unit stands ready to provide exceptional care to critically ill children through 18 years of age.
Neonatal and Pediatric Transport Services. Close cooperation and communication between the Transport Team at Mission Children's Hospital and first-responders, EMS personnel, Mountain Area Medical Airlift (MAMA) and community hospitals, allows infants and children to receive life-saving specialized care while being rapidly transported to PICU services.
